Red Grape Vines

Grapes

This is a catalog of Grapes that are native to winemaking countries in the Balkans. They are underrepresented in the wine world and this is an effort to consolidate the disparate information most wine lovers and students would search out on their own. Furthermore, we believe they shouldn't have to-- so let's start with native grapes from Bosnia-Herzegovina!

01

Žilavka is a beloved grape of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Yugoslavia and today in the balkans. It is a darling grape that the winemakers of Bosnia-Herzegovina adore.

02

Blatina is a red wine grape indigenous to Bosnia-Herzegovina that intrigues and inspires winemakers throughout the country. The vines have a functional female flower and must rely on a partner vine to fertilize the flower to bear fruit-- winemaking is a gamble, this grape ups the ante.
